Sleep, that elusive yet essential elixir of life. We all crave and need it, but we seldom get enough of it – especially if you’re a mom.
I adore what I do, but let’s face it, it can sometimes be an overwhelming, exhausting whirlwind. And when I finally collapse into bed, a swirl of thoughts often keeps me tossing and turning, making it nearly impossible to fall or stay asleep.
I’ve experimented with countless sleep-enhancing strategies – no caffeine, a set bedtime, soothing melodies, etc. Yet, these remedies rarely work consistently. I’ve questioned myself, my mattress, and whether something’s amiss.
But then it dawned on me. The real problem isn’t me or my bed; the unrealistic expectations and societal standards imposed upon us. We’re told that quality sleep equates to eight hours in a dark, silent room, on a perfect mattress, in a specific posture that aligns our spine and neck.
But who decided this is the only path to a good night’s sleep? Why must we adhere to rules that might not align with our unique needs and preferences? And why do we carry guilt or shame if we dare to stray?
I chose to break free from these norms and listen to my body and intuition. I realized that the ideal sleeping position for me is any position that grants me five hours of precious rest, whether on my back, side, stomach, or curled up like a fetus. Whether on the couch, floor or even in the car. With a pillow, blanket, or nothing at all.
The particulars don’t matter as long as I can enjoy rejuvenating rest and wake up refreshed. I no longer concern myself with others’ opinions or judgments. I ignore the hashtags and trends. I focus on myself and my well-being.
And you know what? It works. Since I embraced this perspective, I’ve been sleeping better, feeling happier, and embracing life with newfound energy and creativity. I’m more patient and compassionate with my son and clients. I’ve found greater confidence and joy in living my life.
