Have you ever watched a video, saved an article, listened to a podcast and finished a course, only to find yourself thinking, “I have consumed so much information, so why do I still feel like I do not understand this?”
You are not alone.
Learning in the digital age can feel like standing in front of an enormous library with unlimited access to information. The challenge is rarely finding something to learn. The challenge is knowing what to do with what you find.
That distinction matters.
Educating yourself is more than consuming information. It involves actively making sense of information, connecting it to what you already know and being able to use it.
In this article, we will look at how to educate yourself more intentionally, even when you are learning outside a classroom.
The Information Trap
Imagine putting puzzle pieces into a growing pile.
You keep adding more.
Another article gives you another piece. A YouTube video gives you another. A podcast adds another. A social media post gives you another.
Soon, you have hundreds of pieces.
But there is a problem.
You have collected the pieces without working out how they fit together.
This is a useful metaphor for modern learning.
Having access to information can create the feeling that we are learning, even when we have not processed the material deeply.
Reading something and recognising it later is different from being able to retrieve the idea, explain it or apply it.
That is why effective self-education requires active engagement.
Research-informed learning approaches commonly emphasise practices such as retrieval, reflection, elaboration and connecting new information with existing knowledge.
So, How Do You Educate Yourself?
You do not need to turn your life into a university course.
You can begin with a simple learning cycle.
1. Start With a Question
Instead of beginning with:
“I want to learn about psychology.”
Try:
“How does stress affect a child’s ability to concentrate?”
Instead of:
“I want to learn about nutrition.”
Try:
“What does a balanced breakfast need to provide?”
Instead of:
“I want to learn about artificial intelligence.”
Try:
“How can AI be used responsibly in education?”
A specific question gives your learning direction.
It also makes it easier to decide which information is relevant and which information can wait.
Try this:
Take a piece of paper and write:
What am I trying to understand?
Then write your question underneath it.
Keep that question visible while you learn.
2. Choose Your Sources Carefully
Self-education gives you freedom, but that freedom comes with responsibility.
The internet contains high-quality educational material alongside incomplete, outdated or misleading information.
Before accepting a claim, consider:
- Who created this information?
- What evidence supports it?
- Is the source qualified to discuss the subject?
- Is the information current?
- Can the claim be checked against another reliable source?
- Is the creator presenting evidence or simply presenting an opinion?
This is especially important when learning about health, mental health, education, finance or other areas where inaccurate information can have real consequences.
Being self-educated also means becoming a better evaluator of information.
3. Stop at the Right Point
There is a temptation to keep consuming.
You watch one video and the platform recommends another.
You read one article and open five more tabs.
You download a book because it looks useful.
Then another.
Soon, learning becomes collecting.
Try creating a stopping point.
After learning about your question from a reliable source, close the book or browser and ask:
What do I remember?
Do not look at your notes immediately.
Try to retrieve the information yourself.
This is known as retrieval practice or active recall. Rather than repeatedly exposing yourself to information, you attempt to bring it back from memory.
Learning research has highlighted retrieval practice as an important way to strengthen learning and reveal gaps in understanding.
4. Explain It in Your Own Words
Here is a simple test.
Imagine a child has asked you:
“What did you just learn?”
Could you explain it without reading directly from your notes?
If yes, you are beginning to move from recognition towards understanding.
If no, that is useful information too.
It tells you where your knowledge needs more work.
Try writing:
I have learnt that…
Then continue for two or three sentences without looking at your source.
You may discover that you remember the general idea but cannot explain the details.
That is a learning opportunity.
5. Turn Information Into a Visual
This is where expressive arts can become a wonderful learning tool.
You do not have to be an artist.
Take the concept you are learning and draw it.
You could use:
- A simple diagram
- A mind map
- Symbols
- Arrows
- Stick figures
- Shapes
- A visual metaphor
- A flowchart
The purpose is not to create beautiful artwork.
The purpose is to make relationships visible.
For example, if you are learning about how stress can affect concentration, you might draw:
STRESS → ATTENTION → WORKING MEMORY → LEARNING
Then add examples around each concept.
The act of deciding what belongs together forces you to process the material rather than simply copy it.
Mind mapping has long been used as a way of organising ideas visually, with approaches that emphasise central concepts, branches, keywords and associations.
6. Look for Connections
This is where the puzzle starts coming together.
Ask:
“What does this remind me of from something I already know?”
For example, if you are learning about children’s emotional regulation, you may connect the new information with something you already know about:
- sensory needs
- attention
- communication
- relationships
- classroom behaviour
The more meaningful connections you create, the more useful your knowledge becomes.
You are no longer storing isolated facts.
You are building a network of ideas.
7. Use What You Learn
Knowledge becomes much more useful when you can apply it.
If you learn about communication, try a different communication strategy.
If you learn about budgeting, create a small budget.
If you learn a new language, use the words in a conversation.
If you learn about child development, observe how the concept appears in everyday situations.
Application gives you feedback.
You discover what you understand, what you misunderstood and what you still need to learn.
8. Teach Someone Else
You do not need to become a teacher.
Simply explain the concept to another person.
You could say:
“I learnt something interesting today. Let me see if I can explain it.”
If your explanation becomes confusing, that confusion can show you where your understanding needs strengthening.
Learning approaches that involve explaining, elaborating and retrieving information encourage learners to work with knowledge rather than merely reread it.
9. Keep a Learning Journal
A learning journal can be remarkably simple.
You could dedicate one notebook to questions and discoveries.
For every topic, write:
My question:
What am I trying to understand?
What I learnt:
What can I explain now?
What surprised me:
What challenged what I previously believed?
What I still wonder:
What question has appeared because of this learning?
My visual:
Can I draw the idea?
My application:
Where could I use this knowledge?
This transforms learning from a passive activity into an ongoing conversation with yourself.
A Simple Self-Education Method You Can Try Today
Take 20–30 minutes.
Step 1
Choose one question.
Step 2
Find one reliable source.
Step 3
Learn without opening multiple unrelated tabs.
Step 4
Close the source.
Step 5
Write what you remember.
Step 6
Draw the concept.
Step 7
Identify what you still do not understand.
Step 8
Return to the source only for those gaps.
Step 9
Explain the idea in your own words.
Step 10
Decide how you could use what you learnt.
You have now done something much more valuable than simply consuming another piece of content.
You have processed information into knowledge.
What About Children?
This approach can be particularly useful for children because self-education is a skill that develops over time.
Rather than giving children answers immediately, parents and educators can encourage questions.
Instead of:
“Here is the answer.”
Try:
“What do you think?”
Then:
“How could we find out?”
A child can learn to search for information, evaluate sources, draw connections and explain ideas in their own words.
These habits support independent learning beyond the classroom.
The same principle applies to teenagers and adults.
Learning how to learn is itself a form of education.
You Do Not Need to Know Everything
There is a lot of pressure to keep up.
New books appear.
New research is published.
New technologies emerge.
New opinions compete for attention.
You can easily feel behind.
Self-education becomes more sustainable when you accept that you cannot learn everything.
You can choose what matters to you.
You can ask better questions.
You can investigate them carefully.
You can revisit what you learn.
You can allow your understanding to develop gradually.
Education becomes much more meaningful when curiosity has somewhere to go.
Try the Puzzle Exercise
Here is a simple expressive learning exercise inspired by the visual metaphor from my YouTube Short.
Draw several puzzle pieces on a page.
On each piece, write one thing you already know about a topic.
Then add a new piece representing something you have just learnt.
Now draw lines between pieces that connect.
Ask yourself:
“Why do these belong together?”
If you cannot connect a new piece to anything else, pause.
You may need more context.
If one piece changes how you understand another, make that connection visible.
You are turning a pile of information into a map of understanding.
