A simple number recognition game for children aged 3–5
Your child can count from 1 to 10, yet when you show them a written number and ask, “What number is this?”, they hesitate.
You show them 6, and they say 9.
You show them 4, and they guess 7.
You try again, and after a few minutes, everyone is losing interest.
If this sounds familiar, try changing the way you practise number recognition.
Instead of sitting your child down with a worksheet and asking them to memorise numerals, turn the numbers into something they have to find, spot and identify.
Think of it as a little number detective game.

What Is Number Identification?
Number identification, also called numeral recognition, is the ability to recognise a written number and identify what it represents.
For example, when a child sees 7 and can say “seven”, they are recognising the numeral.
As their understanding develops, they also begin connecting that written symbol with quantity. They learn that 7 represents a group of seven objects.
This distinction matters.
A child may be able to recite:
“1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7…”
without being able to recognise the written numeral 7 when it appears on a page or card.
Counting and recognising written numerals are related skills, yet they do not develop in exactly the same way. Early numeracy activities can therefore give children opportunities to practise each skill separately as well as together.
Why Can a Child Count but Still Struggle With Number Recognition?
Imagine learning a new alphabet.
You might know how a sound feels when you say it, yet recognising the written symbol takes repeated exposure.
Numerals can work in a similar way for young children.
A child may understand the concept of “three” when you give them three blocks, while still needing more experience recognising 3 as a written symbol.
Young children are gradually building connections between:
spoken number → written numeral → quantity
For example:
“Five” → 5 → five objects
Hands-on activities can give children opportunities to strengthen these connections without turning every learning opportunity into formal instruction. Play-based numeracy activities are widely used to support number recognition, counting and early mathematical thinking.
Try the Number Detective Game
Recommended age
3–5 years
You can simplify or increase the challenge depending on your child’s current skills.
What you need
You only need:
- Number cards from 1–9
- A flat surface
- A few minutes of playful attention
You can make the cards yourself with paper and a marker.
You can also use commercially available number flashcards or magnetic numbers.
Step 1: Scatter the Numbers
Place several number cards randomly on the table.
For example:
3 | 8 | 6 | 2 | 9 | 5 | 7
Do not arrange them neatly in numerical order.
The idea is to make your child actually look for the numeral rather than simply recite a familiar sequence.
Step 2: Give Your Child a Mission
Hold up a number card.
Say:
“Oh no! The numbers are hiding. Can you find number 4?”
Let your child search.
When they find it, ask them to touch it.
Then say:
“There it is! Number 4!”
You can make this playful by pretending that the number was trying to hide from you.
Step 3: Mix Everything Again
Move the cards around.
Now choose another number.
“Can you find 7?”
Then:
“Can you find 2?”
Then:
“Can you find 9?”
You are giving your child repeated exposure while changing the visual position of the numeral.
This is useful because the child cannot rely on the number always appearing in the same place.
Step 4: Introduce a Tricky Pair
Once your child is comfortable with the game, introduce numbers that they tend to confuse.
A common example is:
6 and 9
Place them next to each other.
Ask:
“Can you show me 6?”
Then:
“Now show me 9.”
Keep the tone curious rather than corrective.
If your child chooses the wrong card, simply say:
“Let us look again.”
Then point out the difference.
What Is Your Child Actually Practising?
This tiny game gives your child practice with several early numeracy processes.
Visual Recognition
Your child has to notice the shape of the numeral among several other symbols.
Attention
They need to search the group of cards and focus on the number you have named.
Number Language
They hear the spoken number and connect it with the written symbol.
Discrimination
When similar numerals appear together, your child has to notice the visual differences between them.
Flexible Recognition
Moving the cards around means your child encounters the same numeral in different positions rather than memorising its location.
These skills form part of the broader foundation for early mathematical learning. Number identification activities can be combined with counting, one-to-one correspondence and quantity activities as children develop their number sense.
The Important Part: Do Not Turn the Game Into a Test
This is where the adult’s response can make a big difference.
Imagine your child points to 9 when you asked for 6.
You could say:
“No, that is wrong. Look properly.”
Or you could turn the moment into another opportunity to explore.
Try:
“You found 9! We are looking for 6. Let us compare them.”
Now the mistake becomes part of the learning.
Your child gets another opportunity to look at both symbols without feeling that they have failed.
The purpose of the activity is repeated, meaningful exposure.
What If My Child Keeps Getting the Numbers Wrong?
Reduce the difficulty.
You do not need to put nine different numbers on the table.
Start with two.
For example:
3 | 7
Ask:
“Can you find 3?”
Once your child is comfortable, introduce another number.
You can gradually move from:
2 numbers → 3 numbers → 5 numbers → more numbers
You can also use numbers your child already recognises alongside one new number.
For example:
2 | 4 | 7
If 2 and 4 are familiar, introduce 7 as the new challenge.
This gives your child a greater chance of experiencing success while still encountering something new.
Take the Activity Beyond the Table
Number recognition does not have to happen only with flashcards.
Look for numbers in your child’s everyday environment.
During a walk
Ask:
“Can you find a number on that sign?”
At home
Look at:
- The calendar
- The clock
- Remote controls
- Lift buttons
- House numbers
During play
Ask your child to find a particular number on a game board.
While cooking
Ask:
“Can you find number 2 on this measuring cup?”
Children can encounter written numerals in many everyday settings, giving them opportunities to connect mathematical symbols with real-world experiences.
Turn It Into a Movement Game
If your child does not enjoy sitting at a table, move the activity to the floor.
Place number cards around the room.
Call out:
“Find number 5!”
Your child runs to the correct card.
You can change the instruction:
“Jump to number 3!”
Or:
“Touch number 8!”
Now the child is combining movement with visual number recognition.
For some children, this can make the activity feel more engaging than sitting with a worksheet.
Add Quantity Matching
Once your child can recognise the numeral, connect it to quantity.
Place the number 4 beside four objects.
For example:
4 → 🧸 🧸 🧸 🧸
Ask:
“Can you find four teddy bears for number 4?”
This moves the activity from simply identifying a symbol towards understanding what that symbol represents.
You can also use blocks, buttons, toy animals, crayons or pieces of fruit.
The University of Nevada, Reno specifically recommends hands-on activities with everyday materials for preschool number identification, counting and one-to-one correspondence.
Useful Number Learning Materials for Home
You do not need specialised equipment to play this game. Paper cards you make yourself are enough.
If you would like dedicated materials, these are useful categories to consider.
Number Flashcards
A simple set of numeral cards can be used for:
- Number hunts
- Matching games
- Memory games
- Sorting
- Quick recognition practice
Magnetic Numbers
Magnetic numerals are useful for hands-on play. Children can move them around, arrange them in sequence and match them with quantities.
Number Tracing Workbook
Tracing should complement recognition rather than replace it.
Once your child is becoming familiar with the numerals, a tracing workbook can provide opportunities to practise forming the symbols.
A Number and Counting Set
A resource combining numerals with quantities can help children make the connection between the symbol they see and the amount it represents.

A Simple Progression for Parents
You can use the same basic game as your child’s recognition develops.
Stage 1: Find It
“Can you find 4?”
Stage 2: Name It
“What number did you find?”
Stage 3: Match It
“Can you find four objects for number 4?”
Stage 4: Compare It
“Which is 4? Which is 6?”
Stage 5: Find It in Real Life
“Can you spot a 4 around the house?”
The activity can therefore grow with your child’s developing skills.
What About Numbers Like 6 and 9?
Similar-looking numerals can be particularly interesting for young learners.
Rather than repeatedly telling your child that they are different, give them opportunities to compare the symbols.
Place:
6 9
in front of them.
Ask:
“What do you notice?”
You can trace each numeral with your finger.
You can also create a visual story if your child responds well to imaginative learning.
For example:
“These two numbers look like they are doing a little flip!”
The exact explanation you use can depend on your child’s age, language and learning preferences.
The important part is giving the child opportunities to observe the visual form of each numeral.
When Should Parents Be Concerned?
Children develop early numeracy skills at different rates, so a single mistake or period of confusion does not automatically indicate a learning difficulty.
Look at the broader picture.
Is your child gradually becoming more familiar with numbers?
Can they count objects?
Can they match small quantities?
Do they recognise some numerals consistently?
Do they respond when numbers appear in everyday situations?
If you have ongoing concerns about your child’s learning or development, discuss them with your child’s teacher or an appropriately qualified professional. A broader developmental picture is more informative than performance on a single activity.
The Bigger Idea Behind This Game
A number card can look like a tiny piece of paper to an adult.
For a young child, that symbol represents a new visual code they are learning to understand.
That is why the experience around the learning matters.
When you turn “Find number 7” into a little detective mission, your child has a reason to look closely.
When you move the cards around, they have to recognise the numeral rather than memorise its position.
When you connect the numeral with objects, the abstract symbol starts gaining meaning.
And when you respond calmly to mistakes, your child gets another chance to explore.
Try It Today
Grab some paper and write the numbers 1–9.
Scatter them across a table.
Then tell your child:
“The numbers are hiding. Can you help me find one?”
Keep the first round easy.
Let the game become more challenging as your child’s confidence grows.
And remember to follow your child’s interest. If they are enjoying the detective story, keep going. If they are becoming frustrated, simplify the challenge or take a break.
