“Why is the Moon shaped like that?”
“Why do we have dreams?”
“How do birds know where to fly?”
“Why does my brain forget things?”
If you have a curious pre-teen, you may recognise this pattern.
Your child asks you a question. You answer it. A few minutes later, another question arrives.
There is nothing wrong with answering your child’s questions. In fact, curiosity is something we want to nurture.
There is also an opportunity hidden inside those questions.
Instead of always becoming the person who supplies the answer, you can occasionally become the person who helps your child find the answer.
That small shift can support a much bigger skill: learning how to learn.
What Does It Mean to Be a Self-Directed Learner?
A self-directed learner gradually becomes more capable of deciding:
- What do I want to understand?
- What do I already know?
- What do I need to find out?
- Where can I look for reliable information?
- Does this information make sense?
- Can I explain what I have learnt in my own words?
This does not mean expecting a child to manage their learning completely independently.
Children need modelling, guidance and appropriate scaffolding before they can use many learning strategies independently. The Education Endowment Foundation’s current guidance on metacognition and self-regulated learning emphasises explicitly teaching these strategies and gradually supporting pupils towards greater independence.
That is why the activity below begins with you.
Over time, you can hand more of the process over to your child.
Try This: Turn Your Child Into a Learning Detective
This activity works particularly well with children around 9–13 years old.
You need:
- A sheet of paper
- A pencil or coloured pens
- A question your child genuinely wants answered
- Access to an age-appropriate book or reliable online source
You can make the activity more playful by giving your child a small notebook and calling it their Learning Detective Journal.
Step 1: Start With Their Question
Wait for a question your child genuinely wants answered.
For example:
“Why does the Moon seem to change shape?”
Instead of immediately explaining it, say:
“Interesting question. Shall we investigate it?”
That wording changes the experience.
Your child is no longer simply waiting for an adult to provide information.
They are about to investigate something.
Step 2: Ask for Their First Guess
Give your child a sheet of paper.
At the top, write:
MYSTERY QUESTION
Why does the Moon seem to change shape?
Then create three sections:
| MY GUESS | MY CLUES | WHAT I DISCOVERED |
|---|---|---|
| What do I think? | What evidence can I find? | What do I understand now? |
Ask your child to complete the first section before researching.
They can write.
They can draw.
They can use arrows.
They can make a diagram.
They can even say their idea aloud while you write it down for them.
The important part is that they begin with their own thinking.
You are creating a visible starting point.
Step 3: Let Them Investigate
Now give them some appropriate sources.
For a younger child, you might provide a children’s science book.
For an older pre-teen, you could help them identify a reliable website or educational video.
Ask:
“What clues can you find?”
This language is intentional.
You are turning research into an investigation.
Instead of:
“Go and study this.”
You are saying:
“Let’s see what the clues tell us.”
Your child can write down facts, draw diagrams, circle important words or add arrows connecting ideas.
The page will probably become messy.
That is fine.
In fact, the mess is useful.
It shows their thinking developing in front of them.
Step 4: Close the Source
This is where the activity becomes particularly interesting.
Once your child has researched the question, put the book away or close the webpage.
Then ask:
“Now explain it to me without looking.”
Do not immediately correct every detail.
Listen.
What can your child explain?
Where do they hesitate?
Which part have they misunderstood?
Which part can they explain confidently?
You have now created an opportunity for your child to retrieve and organise what they have learnt, rather than simply recognising information they have just read.
Step 5: Let Them Create Their Explanation
Now comes the expressive arts element.
Ask your child to show their answer rather than simply telling you.
They could:
- Draw a diagram
- Create a comic
- Make a mind map
- Use symbols and arrows
- Create a mini poster
- Act out the concept
- Make a visual explanation
For the Moon example, your child might draw the Sun, Earth and Moon and use arrows to show their relationship.
The finished page becomes a visual record of their understanding.
And that is the transformation you want to see:
“I don’t know.”
becomes
“Let me investigate.”
and eventually:
“Let me show you what I discovered.”
Why Does This Work?
There is an important psychological concept behind this activity: metacognition.
Metacognition involves becoming aware of and regulating your own thinking and learning.
For children, this can involve learning to ask:
“What do I already know?”
“What am I trying to understand?”
“What strategy should I use?”
“Do I understand this?”
“How can I check?”
The EEF describes metacognition and self-regulation as approaches that help pupils think more explicitly about their learning, including planning, monitoring and evaluating their work. Its current guidance recommends explicitly teaching and modelling these strategies rather than assuming children will develop them automatically.
That is important for parents.
A child may be capable of learning independently without yet knowing how to approach independent learning.
Those are different things.
Why Ask for Their Own Guess First?
The first guess gives you a window into your child’s existing thinking.
Suppose your child says:
“The Moon changes shape because clouds cover parts of it.”
You now know what they currently believe.
That gives you something to work with.
The child also gets to compare their initial idea with what they discover later.
This creates a natural learning journey:
What I thought → What I found → What I understand now
That final comparison can be surprisingly powerful.
You can ask:
“What did you think at the beginning?”
“What changed your mind?”
“Which clue helped you understand it?”
These questions shift attention towards the process of thinking, rather than simply whether the final answer was correct.
Why Make the Child Explain It?
Reading something and recognising it can feel like understanding.
Explaining it without looking is a different challenge.
When your child tries to explain an idea from memory, gaps in understanding can become visible.
You might hear:
“I know this part… but I don’t know why that happens.”
That is useful information.
You have just discovered where further learning is needed.
You can then say:
“That’s the bit we need to investigate next.”
The conversation becomes collaborative rather than turning into a correction session.
Why Use Drawing?
Not every child finds writing the easiest route into complex thinking.
A drawing can reveal relationships that are difficult to express in a paragraph.
For example, a child might draw:
SUN → MOON → EARTH
Then add arrows showing movement and light.
The visual representation can give them something concrete to discuss.
This is where expressive arts can become a natural learning tool.
The art does not have to be beautiful.
It does not need to be assessed.
It is there to make thinking visible.
The Parent’s Role Matters
There is a temptation to jump in when your child gets something wrong.
You might know the answer immediately.
You might even be able to explain it much faster.
Yet the purpose of this activity is to give your child practice with the process of figuring something out.
Try replacing:
“No, that’s wrong.”
with:
“What made you think that?”
Instead of:
“Here is the answer.”
try:
“What could we check?”
Instead of:
“You should know this.”
try:
“Which part are you unsure about?”
These questions give your child space to inspect their own thinking.
Do Not Turn Every Question Into Homework
This activity should remain playful.
You do not need to create a formal investigation every time your child asks a question.
Choose questions that genuinely interest them.
A five-minute investigation at the kitchen table can be enough.
You could even have a Question Jar at home.
Whenever your child asks something interesting, write it down.
Once or twice a week, choose one question for a Learning Detective session.
That keeps curiosity alive without turning it into another school assignment.
Try Different Types of Questions
The activity does not have to be limited to science.
For science
Why do we get shadows?
For history
Why did people build castles?
For psychology
Why do people sometimes remember embarrassing moments for years?
For nature
Why do some plants grow towards sunlight?
For everyday life
Why does bread become hard when it is left out?
For their own interests
If your child loves football, ask:
How does a football curve when someone kicks it?
If they love gaming:
How does a game decide what happens when you press a button?
If they love drawing:
Why do artists use perspective?
The best question is often the one your child has already asked.
Make the Detective Metaphor Bigger
If your child enjoys the activity, give them a recurring identity.
Create a small notebook called:
THE LEARNING DETECTIVE FILES 🔎
Each investigation gets a page.
Use headings such as:
CASE:
What am I trying to understand?
MY THEORY:
What do I think?
CLUES:
What did I discover?
NEW EVIDENCE:
What changed my thinking?
CASE CLOSED:
Can I explain it now?
This turns learning into a story.
Your child is not being handed another worksheet.
They are building a collection of questions they have investigated themselves.
What If Your Child Says, “I Don’t Know”?
That is perfectly fine.
In fact, it gives you a useful starting point.
You can ask:
“What is one thing you do know about it?”
Or:
“What do you think might be happening?”
Or:
“What would you like to find out first?”
The aim is to move gently from “I don’t know” towards “I could find out.”
That distinction can influence how a child approaches unfamiliar problems.
What If Your Child Gets Frustrated?
Do not insist that they complete the entire investigation independently.
Remember that independence develops with scaffolding.
You can model the first investigation:
“I’m not sure either. Let’s see how I would find out.”
Then demonstrate your thinking aloud:
“First, I need to work out what question I am actually asking.”
“Now I need a source I can trust.”
“This explanation says something different from what I expected. I need to check why.”
The EEF’s guidance specifically highlights modelling and guided practice before expecting learners to use metacognitive strategies independently.
Your support can gradually reduce as your child becomes more familiar with the process.

Useful Products for a Learning Detective Corner
You do not need special equipment. A sheet of paper and a pencil are enough.
If your child enjoys this approach, however, a few simple materials can make the experience more inviting.
1. A children’s magnifying glass
A physical magnifying glass works beautifully with the detective metaphor and can be useful for nature-based investigations.
2. A science or investigation notebook
A dedicated notebook gives children somewhere to keep their questions, predictions, drawings and discoveries.
3. An explorer-style journal
An exploration journal can work particularly well for children who enjoy recording discoveries visually.
Turn Curiosity Into a Habit
The long-term purpose of this activity is bigger than getting your child to answer a question correctly.
You are giving them repeated opportunities to experience this sequence:
I have a question.
↓
I can make a guess.
↓
I can look for evidence.
↓
I can change my thinking.
↓
I can explain what I discovered.
That is a very different learning experience from simply waiting for an adult to provide the correct answer.
And you do not have to wait until your child is older to begin modelling this approach. The amount of support can change according to the child’s age, experience and confidence.
As children become more familiar with the process, you can gradually hand over more responsibility.
A Simple Question to Try Tonight
The next time your child asks:
“Why does that happen?”
pause before giving them the answer.
Try:
“I don’t know. Shall we investigate it?”
Take a sheet of paper.
Write down their question.
Ask for their guess.
Find some clues.
Let them draw what they discover.
Then close the source and ask:
“Can you teach me what you found?”
You may discover that the most valuable thing your child learns that day is not the answer to the question.
It is the experience of discovering:
“I can find things out.”
